What is growing on roofs in Louisville, KY?

Gloeocapsa Magma , commonly known as "roof algae."  This particular type of algae feeds on limestone, a major part of the composition of your roof. Limestone adds weight and strength to the shingle. Gloeocapsa Magma, if left alone, will result in a roof needing to be replaced prematurely. 

Gloeocapsa Magma is a serious problem for Louisville, KY.  It is the cause of a black streak appearance on asphalt shingle roofs. It can be difficult to prevent because gloeocapsa magma travels from house to house by sending out spores carried by the wind.
